The Southwestern Office is an iconic building in the heart of Austin.
Built in 1890 and completed in 1905, the office was the heart and soul of the Southwestern Business District in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
The building was named after Dr. John Wakefield, the city’s first black mayor, who used it as his headquarters from 1929 until his death in 1939.
In the mid-1960s, the building was redeveloped and renamed the Southwest Law Office, which has been an Austin landmark since it opened in 1966.
In the years since, the Southwest has grown into a world-class law firm that is a part of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
The office is home to the Southwest’s most prestigious law firms, including Arnold, Kline, Fisher, Cottrell, Clements, McElroy, Pletcher, Schoen & O’Connor, and McNeil.
