A woman has been arrested in a murder of her mother- in-law in the capital city of Hyderabad, the state’s highest court said on Tuesday.
Gulam Bhatti, 44, is charged with murder in connection with the death of Mohammad Qutub Khattak.
The court has ordered the woman to appear for a preliminary hearing on August 10.
The accused is also facing charges of murder in the murder of another woman, Sohail, in the city’s Hyderabad.
The charges were brought against her under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which carries a maximum penalty of death.
Sohail Khattaks, 52, was found dead in her house in the suburb of Bandra on December 11.
Her husband Mohammad Qadir Khan, 48, is also accused of her murder.
A special court in Hyderabad has been set up to try the case.
The Hyderabad Police, however, has denied the charges and said they were being taken seriously.
“The investigation into the murder and its underlying reason is still under way.
Investigations are being conducted on all angles,” Hyderabad police spokesperson Ashish Kumar said.
The prosecution has alleged that the woman was killed in a fit of rage after her son’s mother passed away from cancer.
The woman, who has not been named in court documents, was arrested from her home and taken to a police station, where she was taken to court to face the charges.
“On hearing the charge sheet, the court asked the police to arrest the woman immediately,” prosecutor Shamsher Kulkarni said.
According to the police, the woman’s son Mohammad, a construction worker, was travelling in a car near the woman and his wife when he was attacked by a man in a white Toyota Camry.
Mohammad Qadar Khan, who had been visiting his mother in Hyderdabad, had allegedly threatened to kill her.
