A Manhattan lawyer who represented Anthony McCarthy in a sexual harassment lawsuit against the FBI and the Justice Department is calling on the president to fire Comey and the attorney general.MCCARTHY LAW OFFICE: ‘THE FBI AND JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ARE WORKING TO REMOVE ME FROM OFFICE’Lawyer Anthony McCarthy filed a lawsuit against Comey and Justice Dept. in March.
McCarthy was an attorney at the firm McCarthy Law Firm from 2009 to 2013 and is now a partner at the law firm Kahan, Miller, O’Connor & Miller.
He was not on the White House team that drafted the bill that passed the Senate Judiciary Committee in December.
In his complaint, McCarthy says Comey’s actions undermined the public’s confidence in the integrity of the FBI, and the president has the authority to fire him.
“Mr. Comey’s behavior on a number of occasions over the past several months has been inconsistent with the standards and expectations that he should have been expected to maintain and which have been reinforced by his colleagues at the FBI,” McCarthy wrote in his complaint.
“The president has no constitutional authority to remove Mr. Comey.”
The FBI has been under a cloud of controversy since former President Trump fired Comey last week.
The FBI is investigating whether Russia attempted to meddle in the 2016 presidential election and whether Trump and his associates colluded with Russia to help him win.
The department also is investigating possible ties between Russia and Trump’s presidential campaign.
Trump fired Comey in May for allegedly lying to the Senate about the investigation into Russian interference and potential collusion.
Trump also said he fired Comey because of the probe, but Trump denied the claim at a news conference on June 8.
